What Does A Habitation Check Cover?

All the elements a Habitation Check covers
  • Electrics
In today’s world of tech, no matter where we are travelling to, we always need electric. Whether that be for vital uses or just some extra comfort and convenience, we always need electric. From the occasional electric needs of charging mobile phones or using hair straighteners, to continuous electric supply for fridges and lights, you need to be sure your motorhome electrics are in safe working order.
A Habitation Check will inspect electric components such as plug sockets, extensions, lights, electrical appliances (fridges etc), circuit breakers, earth bondings, batteries and voltages.
  • Gas Systems
Gas safety is critical. It is vital there are no gas leaks for both occupants and anyone within the vicinity at any time. A Habitation Check with inspect all gas supplies, connections, appliances (e.g. heaters), water boilers, flame failure device (FFD), piping, ventilation and dispersal vents.
  • Water Systems
We all know that water can get anywhere and everywhere and the damage it can cause can be catastrophic, time consuming to clear and expensive. A Habitation Check will inspect water pumps, pressure switches, valves, taps, hoses, tanks, toilets, drains, filters and lubricant seals.
  • Bodywork
The amazing functionality and adaptability of a motorhome means there is a mass market for attachments and accessories. Not only is it important to ensure the vehicle bodywork is in good condition for safe travelling and protection against variable weather conditions, it is also vital bodywork is well maintained , especially if you are going to be attaching accessories. These can include bike racks, extending rising roofs, utilising grab handles, ladders, ariels and attaching additional lighting. A habitation check will also inspect doors, windows, locks, seals, roof, cab seats, blinds and floor (for sponginess or delamination).
  • Underbody
It can be easy to spot a problem on the outer bodywork of a motorhome, but the underbody of a motor home can potentially hide much bigger and more dangerous problems. Without s specific and focussed safe inspection, it is difficult to see what happens under your motorhome. The underbody of a motorhome not only forms or attaches to the main vehicle chasis, it can also used for attachments. A Habitation Check will inspect corner steadiness, folding step attachments, under slug tanks and pipes, security and highlight required lubrication applicants where required.
  • Ventilation
It is also important to ensure your motorhome is well sealed and ventilated in the correct areas. A Habitation Check will inspect for free air flows, highlight obstructions or cracks around seals and joints such as windows (including roof) and doors. A well-sealed, ventilated motorhome protects from vermin, damp and mould ingress, thereby ensuring a safe and healthy trip for all habitants.
  • Damp Check
Damp can form quickly and create health problems to occupants, unappealing aesthetics and corrode materials. Damp can form both on your travels and even more so, over winter and autumn seasons, when your motorhome has not been used. Habitation Checks take readings for any signs of damp, alongside ventilation checks, ensuring you can act quickly and prevent on-going or permanent damage.
  • Fire and Safety
In enclosed spaces and particularly in areas where occupants will be sleeping, another important element of a Habitation Check is to inspect smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, fire blankets and fire extinguishers. This is to ensure there are in good working order, but also that they are within correct certification date periods.
